Turkish Inteligence eyes Arab world

Arab world's view about Turkey has shifted significantly after a chain of developments that started with Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's criticism against Israel President Simon Peres at World Economic Forum in Davos in 2009.

Turkey's image gained more strength in the Arab world during the stand-off between Turkey and Israel following Israeli soldiers' attack on Mavi Marmara flotilla that carries humanitarian aid to Gaza in 2010. Prime Minister Erdogan's and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's harsh comments targeting Israel echoed largely in Arab streets and it raised the interest in Turkey significantly.

According to Ufuk Sanli of Vatan daily these developments also increased the interest in Turkish institutions as well. In order to meet such a demand Turkish intelligence agency MIT has begun to prepare Arabic version of its official website  www.mit.gov.tr to provide a thorough information hub with Arab speakers. Sources close to the secret service confirmed the project was about to complete.

Russian version also on the agenda
Intelligence service aims to make its official website, which receives 120,000 visitors per month on average, more effective. In order to reach more people the agency is planning to put more languages in service. Within this framework, a Russian version is on the agenda. Once it becomes active MIT will have a unique position among world's intelligence services. It will be the agency that has the highest number of languages among the services that are active on Internet. In 2010, 1.04 million people visited MIT's website. Number of visitors increased by 30 percent last year reaching 1.39 million. (Vatan, 23 May 2012)
